Discover the breathtaking landscapes of the Balaton Uplands on two wheels.

Tour of the Tihany peninsula

(Hiking tip: (Source: Balaton Regional Touristic Project Office website))
Route: BBR - Tihany - Tihany pier - Cser mountain - Fishing lake - Sajkod - BBR, 12 km

Variation: Around the Inner Lake 7 km; across the geyser field +6 km
This hike, of medium difficulty, takes you through breathtaking landscapes and architectural attractions, mainly on the paved and dirt road of the Balaton Uplands National Park. It is geared towards proficient bicycle riders and requires mountain bikes, especially for the variation route. The Tihany peninsula is one of the most popular holiday and outing attractions around Lake Balaton, with a unique natural environment, historical and cultural treasures.
The highway on the peninsula’s Eastern shore leading to the pier has heavy traffic during the summer and should therefore be avoided; instead, take the cycling route around Lake Balaton (BBR, indicated by signs) and the slightly uphill highway to Tihany. The charming old village has 140 protected entrances, some of which are part of the Open-Air Ethnographic Museum. Do not miss the Benedictine Abbey and the museum located in the adjacent monastery. The Abbey and the area surrounding it offer a breathtaking view. We also recommend paying a visit to the Doll Museum. On the Echo Hill, the echoing phenomenon has unfortunately disappeared. The tour then takes Kossuth street to get from the village to the pier. Half way, we merge to the right to the uphill Cserhegyi street, which is initially paved before turning into dirt road. We circle the side of Cser mountain and descend to the artificial road on the Western shore. The route crosses lush forests, the Sajkod beach and finally reaches the cycling route around Lake Balaton through the Sajkod connecting road. Taking a right turn, the medieval Abbey church, located at about 600 metres, marks the last station of the bicycle ride.

Variation: Several small streets lead to the Inner Lake from the village of Tihany (e.g. József A. street - Major street). A dirt road goes around the entire lake. From the lake, a tourist road leads to the Golden House (Aranyház) Geyser Cone, then on through the geyser fields to the artificial road located on the western shore, crossing the peninsula.
